CHENNAI: Indian technology company Zoho has unveiled “Nathu La,” an in-house designed server platform built on Intel Xeon 6 processors. The company says the system delivers equivalent performance while reducing power consumption by 12–18% and total cost of ownership by 20–30%, as it seeks to lower AI infrastructure costs and strengthen control over its technology stack.
The launch is part of Zoho’s broader strategy to build greater control over its hardware, cloud and AI infrastructure while reducing operating costs associated with artificial intelligence workloads.
According to the company, Nathu La has been developed over the past five years and is based on Intel’s Xeon 6 processor platform. Intel collaborated with Zoho on engineering and optimization efforts related to the server’s development.
Focus on Technological Self-Reliance
Zoho said the project supports its goal of greater technological self-reliance through in-house development of critical infrastructure components.
While the server relies on imported processor technology, Zoho says the architecture, firmware, systems management software, power delivery systems and workload optimisations have been designed in-house by its engineering teams.
According to Zoho, tighter integration between hardware, software and AI systems can help improve efficiency and reduce infrastructure costs.
Designed to Reduce AI Costs
The launch comes as technology companies worldwide face rising costs associated with running artificial intelligence systems.
AI inference—the process of generating outputs from trained AI models—has become a major infrastructure expense for technology companies.
According to the company, the server delivers equivalent performance while reducing power consumption by 12–18% and lowering total cost of ownership (TCO) by 20–30%.
Developed in India
Zoho said engineers from its hardware development initiatives, including teams associated with its Nagpur operations and the SETU (Student’s Engagement for Transformative Upskilling) programme, contributed to the project.
The company said the programme has trained hundreds of engineering students in electronics system design and manufacturing, with some participants contributing to the development of the server platform.
A Significant Step for India’s Tech Ecosystem
While Nathu La does not involve the development of an indigenous processor, it represents one of the more significant examples of an Indian software company designing server infrastructure in-house.
With Nathu La, Zoho joins a small group of companies seeking tighter control over hardware, software and AI infrastructure as competition in the artificial intelligence sector intensifies.
