ODISHA: In a remarkable display of loyalty and courage, a stray dog named Kali has become a symbol of selfless heroism in the quiet village of Dhirakula in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. The canine gave its life to protect more than 30 young kindergarten students from a venomous snake that had slithered dangerously close to them outside their school.

The incident, which unfolded on a morning around 8:30 a.m., has touched hearts across the state and beyond.

The Fateful Morning at Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir

The children, all kindergarten-age and sitting on the ground near the school premises, close to a well were engaged in their usual morning activities of playing and studying outdoors when the threat appeared. A venomous snake emerged from the area near the well and began moving toward the group of over 30 innocent youngsters.

Before any adult could fully react or intervene, the stray dog Kali, which had been a familiar presence in the village for a long time, sensed the impending danger. School staff, including the operator, had begun attempting to chase the snake away, but Kali acted instantaneously.

Kali’s Valiant Stand Against the Snake

Kali lunged at the snake without hesitation, positioning herself between the reptile and the children. A fierce battle ensued as the dog fought relentlessly to prevent the snake from advancing. Despite sustaining multiple venomous bites, particularly around the mouth and face, Kali refused to retreat.

The struggle lasted for a considerable time until the dog successfully killed the snake, ensuring none of the children came to harm. Tragically, the effects of the venom took their toll; Kali collapsed and succumbed several hours later. No children were injured in the incident, which authorities and locals have attributed directly to the dog’s swift and determined intervention.

A Community’s Emotional Tribute and Traditional Last Rites

The villagers of Dhirakula, who had long regarded Kali as one of their own rather than a mere stray, were devastated yet profoundly grateful. They organised a dignified funeral procession befitting a family member. The dog’s body was placed on a trolley, covered with a white cloth and adorned with flowers, and paraded through the village in a heartfelt farewell. Full traditional last rites usually reserved for humans were performed under the supervision of school operator Ramesh Chandra Prusti, with assistance from several local residents including Bhagirath Sahu, Danardana Prusti, Kamalakanta Hati, Sarbeswar Hati, Himanshu Hati, Krishna Das, Baidhar Singh, and Pramod Sahu.

The community buried Kali with deep respect, viewing the act as a fitting honour for the animal that had protected their children.

Local forest official Mehban Ali, Assistant Conservator of Forest from the Kaptiipada range, described the event, noting how the cobra had come out near the well where the children were studying and how the long-resident dog had prevented it from advancing by fighting and killing it.

School operator Ramesh Chandra Prusti recounted: the small snake had come close to the children, and while they were trying to drive it away, Kali immediately pounced on it and kept it at bay, only to pass away hours later.

Residents expressed their gratitude saying, “Kali saved the lives of our children and will remain immortal in our hearts.” The story has since gone viral on social media, with photographs and accounts circulating widely, turning Kali into a symbol of bravery and reminding many of the often-overlooked role of stray animals in village life.

This poignant tale from Dhirakula village underscores not only the instinctual protective nature of animals but also the deep appreciation shown by the community in return. Kali’s sacrifice has left an indelible mark, ensuring the safety of the children while earning a place of honour in the hearts of those she protected.
