MAHARASHTRA: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has suspended multiple employees at its Nashik office following serious allegations of sexual harassment and forced religious conversion, triggering a police investigation that has already led to the arrest of six individuals.
The IT major has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy and is cooperating with authorities, as the case spanning complaints from at least eight women and one man, highlights alleged procedural lapses within the company’s human resources department.
Timeline of Events: From First Complaint to Multiple FIRs
The matter first came to light on March 25, 2026, when a young woman employed at a BPO unit in Nashik’s Mumbai Naka area approached the Deolali Camp Police Station. She alleged that between 2022 and 2026, three colleagues including a woman had hurt her religious sentiments, while one male colleague had sexually exploited and molested her on multiple occasions.
By April 3, 2026, Nashik Police had registered a total of nine FIRs: eight filed by women employees citing sexual offences and inappropriate religion-linked remarks, and one by a male employee alleging hurt religious sentiments. Police appealed to other employees to come forward, leading to the rapid escalation of the probe.
Details of Allegations: Sexual Exploitation and Religious Pressure
Complainants have accused a group of senior colleagues of maintaining physical relationships under the pretext of marriage, sexual assault in some instances, and exerting pressure to influence religious practices. Specific claims include forcing victims to consume beef, mock Hindu gods and goddesses, and in certain cases, offer namaz as part of alleged conversion attempts. Victims reportedly approached the company’s HR department earlier, but no action was taken at the time.
Police Action: Arrests, SIT Formation and HR Scrutiny
Acting on intelligence inputs from the Nashik Police Commissioner’s office, authorities arrested six TCS employees on April 12, 2026. The arrested individuals have been identified as Asif Ansari, Shafi Sheikh, Shah Rukh Qureshi, Raza Memon, Tausif Attar, and Danish Sheikh (along with one woman whose identity has not been publicly revealed). Most held senior positions, including team lead roles.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the case as “very serious” and praised the Nashik police for their swift response. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the matter thoroughly. Police are also questioning a female HR official based in Pune who was responsible for the Nashik office and allegedly failed to act on prior complaints from the women employees.
TCS Response: Swift Suspensions and Zero-Tolerance Stance
In an official statement issued on April 12, 2026, TCS confirmed that the employees under investigation have been suspended pending an internal enquiry. The company emphasised its long-standing commitment to employee safety and is cooperating fully with law enforcement. A TCS spokesperson stated verbatim: “TCS has a long-standing zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and coercion of any form. We have always ensured the highest standards of safety and wellbeing of our employees at the workplace. As soon as we were made aware of the matter in Nashik, we took swift action. The employees being investigated have been suspended pending enquiry. We are cooperating with the local law enforcement authorities, and any further action will be based on the conclusion of this investigation.”
The case has drawn significant attention, with the company’s final disciplinary actions to be determined once the police investigation concludes. TCS has not disclosed the exact number of suspended employees.
