VISHAKAPATNAM: In a groundbreaking advancement for railway operations, the East Coast Railway’s Waltair Division(ECoR) Zone has introduced ‘ASC Arjun’, the nation’s inaugural humanoid robot designed specifically to bolster passenger safety, security, and service efficiency.

Deployed at Visakhapatnam Railway Station, this innovative technology represents a significant leap in integrating artificial intelligence into public transportation infrastructure.

Launch Event and Background

The robot was officially unveiled on the evening of Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Visakhapatnam Railway Station under the auspices of the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The ceremony was led by Inspector General (RPF) Alok Bohra and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Bohra, with Senior Divisional Security Commandant (RPF) A K Dubey in attendance.

This deployment marks a first-of-its-kind initiative across the Indian Railways network, developed entirely through indigenous innovation in Visakhapatnam by a dedicated RPF team over more than a year, under the guidance of senior railway and security officials.

As part of the RPF’s broader modernization and digital transformation efforts, ‘ASC Arjun’ is intended to supplement key operations including security surveillance, passenger assistance, crowd management, cleanliness monitoring, and safety awareness campaigns.

By providing 24/7 presence and reducing the burden on human personnel, the robot aims to improve response times and overall efficiency in high-traffic environments.

Cutting-Edge Features and Capabilities

‘ASC Arjun’ is equipped with advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, and real-time monitoring systems, enabling it to serve as an intelligent assistant for both RPF staff and passengers. Key features include a Face Recognition System (FRS) for detecting intruders, which triggers instant IoT-enabled alerts to RPF personnel, thereby minimizing detection and response times.

The robot conducts AI-based passenger density analysis to prevent overcrowding and facilitate proactive crowd control, particularly during peak hours. It performs semi-autonomous navigation along predefined paths with built-in obstacle avoidance, ensuring continuous patrolling. Additionally, ‘ASC Arjun’ can deliver autonomous safety and information announcements in multiple languages: English, Hindi, and Telugu to heighten passenger awareness and compliance.

For emergency situations, the robot is capable of early fire and smoke detection, sending immediate alerts for swift response. It provides real-time intelligence via an integrated dashboard, supporting decision-making in control rooms. On the interaction front, ‘ASC Arjun’ engages passengers with friendly gestures, such as greeting them with a Namaste and saluting RPF officers, while offering information support to build public trust and reinforce the authority of security personnel.

Official Statements and Commitment

Inspector General (RPF) Alok Bohra highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “the introduction of ASC ARJUN marks a pioneering initiative in adopting cutting-edge technology to strengthen railway security, improve passenger experience and support frontline staff.” He further noted in an official release, “In a pioneering move, the Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway Zone has deployed a humanoid robot, ‘ASC Arjun’, at Visakhapatnam railway station to strengthen passenger safety, security and service services.”

Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra emphasized the technological prowess, saying, “The robot is equipped with advanced Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and real-time monitoring capabilities, enabling it to function as a smart assistant for both RPF personnel and passengers.”

Railway authorities have also stated that “The robot will send messages to the control and alert the security personnel for quick response,” and “The ASC ARJUN can interact with passengers through friendly gestures and information support, enhancing public trust and the perception of RPF authority.”

In a broader commitment, Indian Railways affirmed, “Indian Railways remains committed to embracing innovation to create a safe, secure and passenger-friendly railway ecosystem.”

Future Prospects

Railway officials have indicated that ‘ASC Arjun’ will undergo further upgrades in the coming period, with potential for deployment at additional stations across the country to expand its impact on railway safety and operations.

This initiative underscores the ongoing push towards technological integration in India’s vast railway network, promising improved experiences for millions of daily passengers.
