India Joins US-Led Global Partnership to Shape the Future of 6G
NEW DELHI: India has joined a United States-led international partnership aimed at accelerating the development of secure next-generation 6G wireless networks.
The announcement was made by the US Department of Commerce on Monday, bringing the total number of participating nations to 25, including countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan.
The initiative seeks to coordinate national 6G strategies well ahead of the technology’s expected commercial rollout in the 2030s, when it is projected to begin replacing existing 5G networks.
According to the US Department of Commerce, the partnership is designed to ensure that next-generation networks reflect shared security interests, strengthen competitiveness and drive innovation.
Discussions on the Sidelines of G20 MeetingUS Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and India’s Minister of State for Commerce Jitin Prasada held discussions on the future of 6G technology on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, last week.
Prasada welcomed India’s participation, stating that the joint effort with the United States and 24 other countries to promote innovation and competition in 6G would give a new direction to the global digital landscape.
Background of the Initiative
The United States launched the “Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security” in July 2026, initially backed by 24 other nations across Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific.
The effort is led by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration under the US Department of Commerce.
It advances the objectives of President Donald Trump’s December 2025 Presidential Memorandum titled “Winning the 6G Race,” which identified 6G networks as foundational to US national security, foreign policy and economic prosperity.
India’s Own 6G Ambitions
India has independently articulated its 6G goals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the country’s 6G Vision document on 22 March 2023.
The document outlines India’s aspiration to become a frontline contributor to the design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.
By joining the US-led partnership, India positions itself to collaborate on standards, security frameworks and research priorities at an early stage of the technology’s evolution.
The move reflects growing international focus on ensuring that future wireless networks are secure, resilient and aligned with the strategic interests of like-minded countries.
As 6G research and standardisation efforts gather pace globally, India’s participation is expected to facilitate knowledge-sharing and joint work on technologies that will underpin advanced applications in connectivity, industry and digital infrastructure over the coming decade.
