Tamil Nadu plans an Olympic City and a dedicated Motorsports City
NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday announced plans to establish a world-class Olympic City in Chennai and a dedicated Motor Sports City in the state.
The initiatives, aimed at building advanced sporting infrastructure, nurturing international-level athletes and promoting sports tourism, were announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly under Rule 110
Tamil Nadu Olympic City
The proposed Tamil Nadu Olympic City will be developed in Chennai by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority (SDAT) as an integrated sports complex meeting Olympic standards.
The facility will feature world-class sporting venues, advanced equipment, a high-performance training centre, sports science and sports medicine centres, along with modern accommodation facilities for athletes and coaches.
Chief Minister Vijay said the Olympic City would serve as a centre for hosting national and international sporting competitions. It is also intended to help identify and train talented athletes from the state who can compete for medals at the Olympic Games and other global events.
“World class, Olympics standard infra and training structure with residential facility will be built. This will help Chennai host international events and to churn out Olympians,” the Chief Minister said.
Motor Sports City
The government also announced plans to set up a Motor Sports City, leveraging Tamil Nadu’s strong automobile manufacturing base and its growing presence in motorsport.
Tamil Nadu is already home to major automobile and motorsport manufacturing facilities, particularly in Chennai and Coimbatore.
The state has established racing venues such as the Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai near Chennai and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, which currently host national-level Formula racing events.
The proposed Motor Sports City will include an international-standard racetrack, modern training facilities and supporting infrastructure capable of hosting global competitions, including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 events.
Chief Minister Vijay said establishing world-class motor vehicle racing arenas would boost tourism, special vehicle manufacturing industries, employment and overall economic development.
The facility is also expected to identify and train young talent in motorsports to create national and international level champions.
The announcements form part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure and position Tamil Nadu as a major hub for both Olympic sports and motorsports.
The projects are expected to provide athletes with better training opportunities while attracting international events and visitors to the state.
