NEW DELHI: Rajasthan has imposed a complete ban on the manufacture, sale, storage, distribution, and promotion of eight popular energy drink brands.

The Food Safety and Drug Controller Commissionerate issued the order after finding several products making misleading health and performance claims in violation of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations. Enforcement teams have already seized more than five lakh cans across the state.

Scope of the Ban and Enforcement Actions

The prohibition applies statewide and covers both physical retail outlets and online platforms, including e-commerce websites and quick delivery apps.

District-level officers have been directed to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance. Any violation of the ban can result in legal action under food safety laws.

In a week-long special drive conducted in over 25 cities and towns, teams from the Medical and Health Department confiscated more than 500,000 cans and bottles of the banned drinks. Vendors have been formally warned against future sales or storage.

List of Banned Brands

The eight brands prohibited in Rajasthan are:

•Red Bull
•Sting
•Monster Energy
•Hell Energy
•Campa Energy
•Hell Sugar Free
•Hell Classic
•Adrenalin Rush (and related variants)

These products were found to carry labels and advertisements claiming they act as “energy drinks” that “vitalise body and mind,” provide instant energy, improve physical performance, or offer other benefits without sufficient scientific backing.

Reasons Cited by Authorities

Officials, including Joint Commissioner Vijay Prakash Sharma and Commissioner Dr. T. Shubhamangla, stated that many companies were promoting these beverages with exaggerated and misleading claims.

Such advertisements fall under prohibited categories as per FSSAI norms because they can confuse consumers about the actual nature and effects of the products.

Energy drinks typically contain high levels of caffeine, sugar, B vitamins, taurine, and other stimulants. While they may provide temporary alertness, authorities and health experts note potential risks with regular or excessive consumption, particularly for children, adolescents, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Concerns include elevated blood pressure, heart rhythm issues, sleep disturbances, and other health complications.

Public Health Advisory

The department has appealed to the public to avoid such products and report any instances of continued sale. Consumers are encouraged to choose safer hydration options like water or natural beverages for daily needs.

This ban is part of ongoing regulatory efforts to ensure truthful labelling and responsible marketing in the beverages segment. Companies whose products are affected will need to address the compliance issues raised by the authorities if they wish to resume operations in the state.
