NEW DELHI: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has launched ‘Cabs with IndiGo’, a dedicated airport transfer service that allows passengers to book cab rides to and from airports through the airline’s website and mobile application. The move marks IndiGo’s latest step towards becoming a comprehensive travel platform rather than remaining solely an airline.

The service has been developed in partnership with travel technology company MojoBoxx and is designed specifically for air travellers. Customers can pre-book airport transfers, receive confirmed rides, avoid surge pricing, and earn loyalty rewards through the airline’s BluChip programme.

According to IndiGo, cab bookings can be made starting from ₹49, subject to route and service availability. The service offers fixed and transparent pricing, free cancellation until pickup time, and up to 30 minutes of complimentary waiting time to account for travel uncertainties. IndiGo says the platform offers confirmed rides and assured pickups for passengers travelling to and from airports.

Why IndiGo Is Launching a Cab Service

The launch reflects a broader shift in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly seeking to enhance the overall travel experience rather than focusing only on the flight segment.

IndiGo has already expanded into hotel bookings and sightseeing experiences through its digital platform. According to the airline, the new service is designed to provide a seamless travel experience by integrating airport transfers with flight bookings, allowing passengers to manage more of their journey through a single platform.

The airline says the service is intended to address some of the most common challenges faced by travellers, including ride cancellations, uncertain cab availability, waiting times, and surge pricing during peak travel periods.

Passengers who are members of IndiGo BluChip will earn five reward points for every ₹100 spent on cab bookings, creating additional incentives for customers to remain within the airline’s ecosystem.

Growing Importance of Airport Transfers

The launch comes amid growing demand for app-based airport transportation as air travel continues to expand across India.

As the country’s aviation sector grows and new airports become operational, first-mile and last-mile connectivity are becoming increasingly important parts of the travel experience. Airport transfers often represent the first and final stages of a passenger’s journey, making reliability and convenience key considerations.

How It Compares with Global Trends

IndiGo’s move mirrors a broader international trend in which airlines and travel platforms are offering services beyond air travel.

Globally, many airlines and travel companies now allow passengers to book airport transfers, hotels, insurance, and local experiences through a single platform. The objective is to simplify travel planning while creating a more integrated customer experience.

The launch places IndiGo within this growing trend of end-to-end travel providers that aim to serve passengers throughout their journey rather than only during the flight.

Benefits for Commuters

For passengers, the biggest advantage is convenience.

Instead of booking a flight on one platform and arranging transportation separately through another application, travellers can manage both services in one place. This can reduce coordination challenges, particularly during early morning departures, late-night arrivals, or travel to unfamiliar destinations.

The absence of surge pricing could also help passengers avoid unexpected fare increases during periods of high demand. Confirmed bookings and complimentary waiting time may provide greater reliability for travellers whose flights are delayed or arrive ahead of schedule.

For frequent flyers, the integration with BluChip rewards provides an additional benefit by allowing customers to earn loyalty points on both air and ground transportation.

A New Revenue Stream for IndiGo

The launch is also strategically important for IndiGo’s business model.

Airlines around the world are increasingly focusing on ancillary revenues, which include services beyond ticket sales such as baggage fees, seat selection, hotel bookings, travel insurance, and airport transfers. These services can help airlines diversify their revenue streams while strengthening customer engagement.

As India’s largest airline by market share, IndiGo serves millions of passengers annually, providing a large customer base for additional travel-related services. By offering airport transfers, the airline has an opportunity to capture a greater share of travellers’ overall spending while strengthening customer loyalty.

Looking Ahead

The launch of ‘Cabs with IndiGo’ signals the airline’s ambition to evolve into a broader travel and mobility platform.

The move also adds another option in India’s airport mobility market, where ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Ola are widely used by travellers. As competition intensifies across aviation, mobility, and travel technology sectors, integrated travel services are likely to become an increasingly important differentiator.

The launch comes at a time when India’s aviation sector is witnessing rapid growth, with airlines increasingly looking beyond ticket sales to offer additional travel services such as hotels, transfers, travel experiences, and loyalty benefits.

For passengers, the service promises a more seamless journey. For IndiGo, it represents an opportunity to deepen customer engagement, generate additional revenue streams, and strengthen its position within India’s rapidly expanding travel market.
