Sovereign Radar: Netra AWACS Gets Final Operational Clearance

BRIEF: The DRDO is set to grant Final Operational Clearance to the indigenous Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control system on June 25 in Bengaluru. This critical certification marks the full combat readiness of the IAF's "eye in the sky," paving the way for the advanced Mk1A and Mk2 variants to bridge the regional airspace monitoring gap.

Indian Air Force’s premier indigenous surveillance asset is about to lose its experimental training wheels. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officially announced that the homegrown Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system will receive its Final Operational Clearance (FOC) on June 25, 2026. The formal declaration ceremony will take place at the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in Bengaluru, sealing a major milestone for India’s domestic “system of systems” engineering.

This certification marks the absolute operational maturation of India’s first homegrown airborne command-and-control platform. Caught in the restricted boundaries of development configurations for years, the formal granting of FOC removes any lingering operational boundaries. It signals to regional adversaries that the platform is fully certified for high-intensity, unrestricted combat deployment across contested airspaces.

The Tech Behind the Clearance: No More Asterisks

In military procurement, crossing from Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) to Final Operational Clearance (FOC) is a rigorous technological gauntlet. It indicates that the armed forces and DRDO have thoroughly validated every subsystem under extreme combat simulations, proving full combat readiness without caveats.

The Netra platform achieves this through a sophisticated blend of domestic hardware integrated onto a modified Brazilian Embraer EMB-145 regional jet. The technical configuration relies on several core pillars:

  • The Dorsal AESA Array: Unlike traditional rotating radomes, Netra features an indigenous Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar mounted in a spine-like configuration. This design minimizes aerodynamic drag while providing a 240-degree coverage arc capable of tracking airborne and maritime targets simultaneously.
  • Hybrid Surveillance Architecture: The aircraft integrates a passive radar homing head to map hostile electronic emissions alongside advanced Electronic Support Measures (ESM).
  • Hardened Communications: The FOC validation specifically confirms the seamless integration of indigenous Software-Defined Radios (SDR) and anti-jamming data links. This allows Netra to act as a flying server, routing real-time targeting telemetry directly to frontline Su-30 MKI and Rafale fighters without routing through vulnerable ground stations.

From Balakot to Operation Sindoor: Battle-Proven Surveillance

The upcoming FOC ceremony is the culmination of extensive real-world operational seasoning. The Netra system famously proved its strategic worth during the 2019 Balakot aerial engagements, where it effectively managed defensive fighter packages and detected inbound adversarial strike formations. More recently, during the high-intensity air duels of Operation Sindoor, the platform’s ability to maintain network-centric coordination under heavy electronic jamming conditions validated its electronic counter-countermeasure (ECCM) suites.

As the fleet numbers indicate, India has historically faced a numerical deficit in airborne early warning assets compared to its neighbors. The formal FOC certification ensures that the existing three Netra platforms can be pushed to their maximum operational limits, maximizing airborne availability rates along highly sensitive border corridors.

Scaling Up the Sky Net

With the baseline Netra Mk1 platform achieving full maturation, the DRDO and IAF are fast-tracking a major fleet expansion to completely bridge the regional surveillance gap. The strategic roadmap follows two distinct paths:

First, the Defence Acquisition Council has already set the gears in motion for six additional Netra Mk1A systems. Built on the same Embraer platform, the Mk1A variant will incorporate next-generation Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based Transmit/Receive modules. This advanced semiconductor material drastically boosts power output, expanding the target detection range from the original 200 kilometers to an impressive 450 kilometers.

Second, the multi-billion dollar Netra Mk2 project is moving ahead smoothly. The Mk2 will abandon the smaller regional jet in favor of pre-owned Airbus A321 commercial airliners. This larger platform allows for a larger radar array offering a wider 300-degree coverage arc, extended flight endurance, and a significantly larger onboard mission control crew. By securing the foundational FOC for the Netra family this June, India has cemented the electronic blueprint required to guarantee absolute sovereign dominance over its skies.
