MUMBAI: Australia-based data centre operator AirTrunk has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the Maharashtra government for a proposed ₹2 lakh crore ($21 billion) data centre project at the Raigad Pen Growth Centre, one of the largest data centre investments announced in India.

The proposed project will be developed at the Raigad Pen Growth Centre near Mumbai and is planned with a capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW). If completed as announced, it would rank among the largest data centre developments in India.

AirTrunk founder and Chief Executive Officer Robin Khuda met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai, where the state government issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) for land allotment, a key step towards the project’s development.

According to the Maharashtra government, the project is expected to strengthen the state’s position as a major hub for digital infrastructure, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

AirTrunk, which operates hyperscale data centres across Australia and Asia-Pacific markets, recently entered India through the acquisition of Indian data centre developer Lumina CloudInfra. The company is backed by global investment firm Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and serves major cloud and technology companies.

The planned facility comes amid rising demand for data centres in India as cloud adoption, AI workloads and digital services continue to expand rapidly. Industry experts expect India to become one of the fastest-growing data centre markets globally over the coming decade.

Maharashtra has emerged as India’s leading data centre destination, benefiting from strong connectivity, access to subsea cable networks and proximity to major financial and technology hubs. The AirTrunk project is expected to further boost the state’s role in supporting the country’s digital economy.

If developed as planned, the ₹2 lakh crore project would rank among the largest data centre investments announced in India and further expand the country’s rapidly growing digital infrastructure sector.
