Intelligence reports indicate that the Pakistan Air Force is close to inducting its first batch of Chinese-made Shenyang J-35AE fifth-generation stealth fighters. Defense circles are not just worried about the stealth airframe itself. Instead, they are deeply concerned about its integration with Beijing’s latest ultra-long-range Beyond-Visual-Range air-to-air missile, the PL-16.
This deadly combination could dramatically disrupt the air combat equation in the region. Some reports suggest that the dual threat of a low-observable radar cross-section and a missile with an estimated range crossing 200 kilometers could severely restrict the Indian Air Force’s operational flexibility. Specifically, it could push back the safe launch points for India’s air-launched cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions. Consequently, this shift forces a complete rethink of modern aerial warfare doctrines.
Redrawing the Standoff Lines: Shifting Air Weapon Deployment Ranges
Currently, the IAF enjoys a significant advantage in standoff engagements. Operating advanced platforms like the Rafale and the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI, Indian pilots can deploy heavy precision-guided munitions from deep within their own territory. For example, they can deploy the Gaurav glide bomb, BrahMos ALCM, Rampage, Spice 2000 or the SCALP cruise missile. This tactic allows them to strike enemy hubs without crossing into hostile airspace.
However, the deployment of a stealthy J-35 platform armed with the PL-16 completely changes this calculus. Because a stealth fighter can significantly delay detection by conventional ground radars, it can slip closer to the border unnoticed. Armed with a 200-kilometer range missile, a J-35 could threaten Indian strike aircraft long before they reach their optimal release points.
Consequently, to protect its strike formations from surprise long-range attacks, the IAF might be forced to push its launch lines up to 200 kilometers further back into Indian territory. Therefore, this defensive retreat would reduce the effective penetration depth of India’s precision weapons. As a result, it shields critical targets deep inside enemy territory from standoff bombardment.
Is the PAF Putting All Its Eggs in One Basket?
Furthermore, relying entirely on the J-35 and PL-16 combination creates a single point of failure. If the IAF manages to decode the electromagnetic signature of the J-35, the PAF’s entire operational edge could vanish overnight. This decoding process involves identifying how the aircraft behaves across the spectrum and calculating the minimum safe distance required to maintain tracking. Additionally, it allows India to develop precise electronic countermeasures against the active radar seeker head of the PL-16.
Fortunately, the IAF has entire dedicated teams for such headaches. It maintains specialized electronic intelligence units and establishments dedicated entirely to these technical tasks. The J-35 will certainly grant the PAF a temporary tactical advantage. However, the IAF’s dedicated ELINT and SIGNIT efforts will systematically expand its database on the platform.
Consequently, Indian planners can easily craft specialized counter-tactics and comprehensive contingency plans. Modern air campaigns cannot be won by a few elite stealth fighters alone. They require sustainable numbers across multiple squadrons, a reality that the raw economic data of the region simply cannot support for Islamabad.
How the IAF Can Negate Stealth
To counter this emerging fifth-generation threat, the IAF may shift its focus away from purely fighter-versus-fighter engagements. Instead, it will rely heavily on its ground-based Integrated Air Defence System. Ground sensors, long-range radars, and advanced Surface-to-Air Missile networks will play a vital role in removing the element of surprise from the J-35.

India’s S-400 Triumf and indigenous Project Kusha long-range SAM systems are equipped with advanced multi-band radar networks, including L-band and VHF frequencies. While stealth aircraft are highly optimized to evade standard X-band tracking radars used by fighter jets, their low-observable geometry is far less effective against giant, long-wavelength ground radars.
By feeding tracking data from these ground stations directly into the Integrated Air Command and Control System, India can achieve early warning capability. This integrated network can track an incoming J-35 and transmit its exact coordinates directly to airborne Indian fighters via secure data links. This approach effectively forces the stealth jet into a conventional, visible air battle.
Surviving the Imbalance: The Urgent Need for a Stop-Gap Solution
While India’s long-term answer to this problem rests on the development of its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft fifth-generation program, that platform is still several years away from active squadron service. Therefore, the IAF urgently requires an immediate stop-gap solution to survive the temporary capability gap. This stop-gap strategy must focus on two immediate areas.
First, the IAF must focus on Long-Range Air-to-Air Upgrades. The IAF must fast-track the induction of the Astra Mark 2 and Astra Mark 3 solid-fuel ducted ramjet missiles across its entire fighter fleet. Matching the range of the PL-16 is absolutely vital to ensure Indian pilots are not out-ranged in a beyond-visual-range fight.
Second, the military must focus on Procuring Interim Advanced Assets. To bridge the physical fifth-generation gap, India may need to consider the rapid, off-the-shelf procurement of a ready-made platform. This reality is giving fresh life to Russia’s persistent offer to sell a limited number of its Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighters to New Delhi.
Ultimately, technology is only as good as the military doctrine behind it. By combining advanced long-range air-to-air missiles, multi-band ground sensors, intelligence-driven electronic warfare tuning, and targeted interim aircraft purchases, IAF can successfully dismantle the J-35 threat. In the unforgiving mathematics of modern air warfare, an integrated network will always defeat an isolated stealth platform.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise if, during a future engagement, IAF openly declares that it had been systematically refining its training and aerial tactics specifically to hunt down the J-35. This scenario mirrors the public briefing conducted by the PAF during Operation Sindoor. In that press conference, Pakistani officials openly admitted that they had intentionally targeted Indian Rafales because the platform had become the crown jewel of the IAF inventory. A similar, highly calculated response by the IAF should not be dismissed as a mere tit-for-tat reaction but a definitive settlement of unfinished business from the IAF’s perspective.
