India’s semiconductor ambitions have received a major boost after Kerala-based startup Netrasemi launched its first artificial intelligence chip, the A2000, and started customer trials ahead of its planned commercial rollout.
The company, backed by software giant Zoho, announced that its flagship AI System-on-Chip (SoC) has successfully completed silicon bring-up testing, a crucial stage in semiconductor development where a newly manufactured chip is powered on and validated for the first time. With this milestone achieved, the A2000 is now considered production-ready and has entered the customer evaluation phase.
The development marks an important milestone for India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem as the country seeks to strengthen domestic chip design and manufacturing capabilities.
What Is the A2000 Chip?
The A2000 is an Edge AI System-on-Chip designed to perform artificial intelligence tasks directly on devices rather than relying on cloud servers.
Built on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) 12-nanometre process technology, the chip is designed for applications such as smart surveillance cameras, intelligent video gateways, robotics, drones, industrial automation systems and automotive vision platforms.
Unlike traditional cloud-based AI systems, edge AI chips process data locally on the device itself. This allows faster response times, lower latency, improved privacy and reduced internet bandwidth requirements.
As industries increasingly adopt real-time AI applications, demand for edge AI processors is growing rapidly across sectors including security, manufacturing, transportation and smart infrastructure.
Designed for Real-Time AI Processing
According to the company, the A2000 integrates several processing engines developed in-house by Netrasemi.
These include:
– Neural Processing Units (NPUs) for AI workloads
– Vision Processing Units (VPUs) for computer vision tasks
– Image Signal Processors (ISPs) for image and video enhancement
– Security and cryptography engines
– High-speed PCIe connectivity
The company says the chip is built on its heterogeneous graph-stream parallel processing architecture, which is designed to improve performance while maintaining power efficiency.
This architecture enables devices to run complex AI workloads such as object detection, facial recognition, motion tracking and video analytics directly on the edge device without depending on remote data centres.
Customer Trials Already Underway
Netrasemi has started early-stage trials of the A2000 with three customers operating in the surveillance and automotive sectors.
The company is currently working with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on sample testing, product evaluation and joint development efforts. These trials will help validate the chip’s performance in real-world commercial environments before large-scale deployment.
Company executives have indicated that surveillance systems and automotive applications are expected to be among the first major markets for the chip due to their increasing need for real-time AI processing.
Backed by Zoho and Government Support
Developing advanced semiconductor products requires significant capital and long development cycles.
Netrasemi says it has raised approximately ₹125 crore from investors including Zoho Corporation and Unicorn India Ventures.
The startup has also received support from the Government of India’s Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme, which aims to encourage domestic semiconductor design and innovation.
In 2023, Netrasemi was among the first startups selected under the DLI programme and received support worth ₹15 crore for chip development activities.
The government has identified semiconductor manufacturing and design as strategic sectors under India’s broader technology and industrial development plans.
Why This Launch Matters for India
India has long been known for its semiconductor design talent, with thousands of engineers contributing to global chip companies. However, the country has historically lacked homegrown semiconductor products that successfully reach commercial markets.
The A2000 represents an important step because it has progressed through multiple critical stages of development:

Production Plans and Future Roadmap
The A2000 was fabricated using TSMC’s 12-nanometre process technology.
The company is targeting commercial deployment following customer validation, with reports indicating a timeline between late 2026 and 2027.
Beyond the A2000, Netrasemi is also developing additional semiconductor products.
These include the R1000, an AI microcontroller aimed at smart IoT sensors, and the A4000, a more advanced edge AI processor designed for high-performance applications.
The company expects the A4000 to reach fabrication readiness by 2027.
India’s Growing Semiconductor Push
The launch comes at a time when India is investing heavily in semiconductor manufacturing, design and research capabilities.
The government has announced multiple incentive schemes and partnerships aimed at building a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. Several global companies have also announced investments in chip assembly, packaging and manufacturing projects across the country.
While fabrication remains one of the most complex parts of the semiconductor value chain, startups like Netrasemi demonstrate India’s growing capability in chip design and product development.
Industry experts believe that success in edge AI processors could create opportunities for Indian companies to serve emerging markets in surveillance, robotics, industrial automation and smart city infrastructure.
