Alteon Energy, a startup based in Bengaluru, has announced the development of a High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) drone named “Infinity.” The company claims this drone is designed to fly continuously for over 400 days in the stratosphere without needing to land.
This is a significant development in aerospace because flying for more than a year at a time would effectively make this drone a “pseudo-satellite”, performing the job of a satellite (like monitoring borders or providing 5G internet) at a fraction of the cost, and with the ability to come back down for upgrades.
Most long-endurance drones rely purely on solar power (batteries charge by day, drain by night). However, batteries are heavy, and carrying enough power to survive the long, dark nights is the biggest hurdle.
Alteon is reportedly solving this with a hybrid approach. Standard solar panels for daytime energy. The drone features wing-mounted turbines. It is designed to use a technique called “dynamic soaring,” where it dives between different wind currents to generate kinetic energy. The turbines convert this wind energy into electricity to keep the batteries charged overnight.
While the is a massive leap, the concept of HAPS (High Altitude Platform Stations) has been around for years. The world record for the longest continuous flight is held by the Airbus Zephyr, a solar-powered drone. It flew for 64 days in 2022 before crashing. The Zephyr relies entirely on solar power and extremely lightweight batteries. Alteon’s addition of wind-harvesting technology is the theoretical key to jumping from 60 days to 400+ days.
It is important to note that “400+ days” is currently a design capability/goal, not a record that has been physically broken yet. The drone is “set to fly” and prove these numbers. If successful, it would be the first aircraft in history to fly for over a year non-stop.
Note to Readers: Information regarding Alteon Energy and the specific technical specifications of the “Infinity” drone is currently limited to select defense publications and early corporate filings. As of now, the company has not released a comprehensive public technical dossier or an official consumer-facing platform.
The details mentioned in this article, including the “400-day endurance” claim, are based on available preliminary reports and may be subject to change as the technology progresses through its development and testing phases. We are actively monitoring official channels and will update this story with verified data, flight test results, and official statements as soon as they become available.
