BENGALURU: ISRO is all geared up to launch its heaviest communication satellite, CMS-03, on November 2 from Sriharikota, marking a major leap in India’s space and defence capabilities. The 4,400-kg satellite, to be carried by the Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3), the same rocket that powered Chandrayaan-3, will enhance secure communications for military and oceanic operations across the Indian region.
In a demonstration of India’s growing indigenisation strength, CMS-03 (also known as GSAT-7R) will be the heaviest communication satellite ever lifted by the country to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). This multi-band satellite is the next big step in India’s strategic secure communications network.
ISRO has stated that “CMS-03 is a multi-band communication satellite which will offer services over a vast oceanic area including the Indian continent.” According to India Today, the satellite is specifically designed to “transmit voice, video and data among naval ships, submarines and aircraft deployed across the Indian Ocean Region,” significantly boosting the communication capabilities of the Indian Navy.
This increased coverage is vital, as it provides critical communications links for the nation’s defence forces, especially those operating in the expansive maritime space, thus enhancing overall national security and strategic vigilance. The successful launch of CMS-03 will further affirm ISRO’s expertise in handling complex satellite missions, a proud stride toward India’s vision of self-reliance in advanced space technology.
